rAge (the really Awesome gaming expo) is South Africa’s biggest annual video gaming, computer, technology and geek culture exhibition, showcasing the latest and greatest in the gaming and technology world. It’s also a space where you can find out all there is to know about the exciting careers and opportunities available in the local gaming industry.

Over the course of the weekend (7 to 9 October, 2016) tens of thousands of enthusiastic fans descend on the Ticketpro Dome for three days of gaming, technology, gadgets, pop culture and geek lifestyle entertainment.

You can buy new games and consoles, chat with local comic book artists, or take selfies with your favourite cosplayers. The show is a glimpse into the future and it has always been about trying out new things and getting some hands-on time before you make your purchasing decisions. Many call it the event of the year, where you can escape your reality for a single day or even the whole weekend.

Africa’s first eSports Branding Summit will also launch at the rAge Expo on Friday, 7 October 2016. The half-day event will explore opportunities eSports presents to South African business and how it can capitalise on the eSports phenomenon, which is taking millennial audiences by storm across the globe. The total worldwide market for eSports is estimated to reach $910 million in 2016.

eSports has until 2016 largely been an underground movement in South Africa. Having said that, PwC benchmarks the South African gaming industry at over R2.6 billion, estimating it will reach R3.6 billion by 2019. Speakers and panellists will include several local eSports organisations, broadcasters and digital agencies.

Topics to be covered at the eSports Branding Summit include:

  • eSports as a Global Movement
  • The South African eSports Landscape
  • Brands and Audience: Reaching a Millennial Generation
  • Media and eSports: Freemium Models of Reaching Audience

The Digital Gaming Championship (DGC) will also be taking place at the rAge expo this year, where 500 of the best competitors from the seven leagues have been invited to take part.  The first season of new format of the Telkom Digital Gaming League (DGL) comes to its conclusion in October with the Master’s Final tournament.  There will be teams from each of the eight Masters Multi-Gaming Organisations (MGOs) competing for South Africa’s largest eSports cash prize pool in history – R1 million.

The CWL MAG Cup is already shaping up to be the biggest Call of Duty console tournament in South Africa with over R120 000 in prizes and gear up for grabs. The final eight teams of the CWL MAG Cup will battle it out in front of a live audience at rAge. The fial will also  be streamed live to the Call of Duty community in South Africa and internationally. All games will be streamed live on: https://www.youtube.com/c/TelkomGaming/live.
