The 38th Annual Loerie Awards were once again held at the Durban ICC over the weekend of 21 and 22 August, 2016 and after the winners were announced it seems this will be the year the awards will be known as the “Loerie Chicken Awards”.

A total of eight Grand Prix awards of 316 awards were handed out over the two nights. The winners were selected from 3,112 entries from 22 countries across the Africa Middle East region.
Nando’s went home to roost with two Grand Prix awards while KFC and Chicken Licken kept it in the avian family each taking home a coveted bird statue.

Celebrating Women’s Month
TheLoeries® celebrated Women’s Month with a strong focus in women in media. There was a strong line-up of talented and accomplished female speakers at the DStv Seminar of Creativity and women featured prominently in the Loeries judges and award-winners.

Suhana Gordhan, creative director at FCB Africa, was announced as Loeries®’ newest chairperson while Yegs Ramiah, Chief Executive of Brand at Sanlam and Santam, was recognised for her role in rebranding the iconic financial services brands with the Marketing Leadership & Innovation Award.
The head of Facebook Africa, Nunu Ntshingila-Njeke, became the first woman inducted into the Loeries®. The Adams and Adams Young Creatives Award was also awarded on the night, to Katie Mylrea, art director at Ogilvy & Mather Cape Town and Amori Brits, head of design at Shift Joe Public.
And the annual Loeries® Creative Future Scholarship for 2017 was given to four young KwaZulu-Natal Grade 12 students. The four lucky Grade 12 students are Londeka Gumede and Roxanne Schoon from Durban Girls High, as well as Mali Khuzwayo from Mowat Park High and Samkelisiwe Faku from Inanda Newtown Comprehensive.
