It is award season globally and just like everyone else, South Africa is not immune to the season. Over the weekend of the 18th of March, South Africa held its annual Film and Television awards known as the SAFTAs at the Sun City Superbowl.  All the who’s who in the television and film industry were in attendance looking all sorts of dapper anticipating walking away with a golden horn. First time hosts Thando Thabethe and Katlego Maboe delivered a clean opening monologue and oozed chemistry on stage. Without missing a beat, Katlego backed by his co-host Thando made sure to remind the audience he has been nominated in the best presenter category, an award which was won by Our Perfect Wedding presenter, Thembisa Mdoda.

The award ceremony seemed to go on without a glitch, with the audience engaged and the jokes having the desired effect and for this, all the credit should be given to the script writers for the effortlessness of the evening.  The first evening of the awards which is not broadcast, was held on Thursday by Katlego Maboe, gave recognition to the people in the television and film industry who work behind the scenes making sure on-camera talent is given the correct direction, wardrobe is on point and make-up is on fleek.

Highlights from the evening include Thando hinting at Generations for the win for best soapie, Katlego propositioning Anele for a job (Best Talk Show winner), the resounding round of applause Warren Masemola received for his best supporting actor win and the most memorable award was the one awarded to Lydia Mokgokoloshi for her lifetime achievement award. Anyone who grew up watching vernacular TV dramas, knows this lady has left a mark in the hearts of many with her brilliant performances and mean side eye.

The evening was fun-filled with artists from different genres giving performances to entertain the crowd. The awards truly honoured all those who work in the Television and Film industry to bring us entertainment daily without any exclusions.
